Great idea, somewhat flawed implementation (updated review for 1.1)

Reviewed By: belthegor on 08 Feb 2023

First of all, Kid Chameleon is one of my favorite games of all time, so it was great to see someone finally do something like this. However, a few unfortunate flaws did detract from my experience:

  • Repeating levels. I found myself having to replay the same levels way more times than I’d care to. I even got the same level twice in a row on at least one occasion. If some logic could be implemented to prevent the same level from being picked more than once, that would be great. It’d make the hack less repetitive and give the player a good sense of progression.
  • Removal of continues. It would be better to allow the player to decide whether or not they wish to have continues. This isn’t a big problem for emulator/savestate users but is obviously limiting and punishing on real hardware.
  • One instance of a game-breaking bug: dying in the same level twice caused a complete game reset back to title screen, despite the fact that I had plenty of lives left. (The stage I was playing happened to be Ice God’s Vengeance, if that makes a difference.)

If these issues could be fixed, this hack would be practically perfect. I do still recommend checking this hack out if you’re a fan of the game, though.

  • v1.1a Update: The removal of the life loss penalty for choosing to restart a round in the pause screen is a nice addition. However, the issue of duplicate levels unfortunately does not appear to be fixed. I am still getting level repeats during gameplay. And to be clear, in this case I don’t mean getting the same level twice consecutively, I mean having to play some maps multiple times over the course of one playthrough. It can get extremely repetitive.
