What's the point of this hack?

Reviewed By: Arathieus on 30 Dec 2022

The main reason to play this, it seems, are the gameplay-change gimmicks, although now you can pick and choose which of these you want with the Patcher64+ Tool - so I’ll just talk about this game from a standalone dungeon remix perspective.

A few of the dungeon changes are unique and interesting… most aren’t. In one instance I was looking for a switch, and I saw a wooden crate in the room, thinking “huh, that’s where the switch usually is” so I rolled into the crate and behold, the switch - identical to its placement in Master Quest. It was disappointing, and this trend continued throughout the game. In Jabu-Jabu’s belly, there are dozens of cows disguised as switches you must slingshot to activate, however only a couple of them actually do anything. I’m running around shooting cows in the face and butt trying to see if any drop anything useful or activate doors and I’m rewarded with Deku Seeds and Recovery Hearts. It’s not challenging or rewarding, it’s dumb. At times when I got stuck, I found myself shooting nearly everything with slingshot/bow and grinding for ammo. I got as far as Water Temple before boredom compelled me to quit, I got sick of seeing what were essentially Master Quest dungeons with slight gimmicky alterations, as with the wooden crate gimmick mentioned above I predicability rolled into EVERY WOODEN CRATE I could find, of which the author added quite a lot in the dungeons - I found myself wondering he wanted to torture me. I opened chests, excitedly hoping it would be a different item from the base Master Quest game, only to be disappointed. Additionally, “the shoot your slingshot at cow” gimmick was reused quite a bit, with other unassuming objects besides cows. A tip - a new gimmick is only cool and interesting when you use it sparingly and with careful thought, not spammed throughout the game. When other hacks like Zelda’s Birthday and The Missing Link exist - it’s hard to acknowledge a hack like this. I really don’t want to be rude, I know the author probably spent a lot of time on this hack and hacking games is hard work, but this hack just wasn’t fun. Maybe I’m being too harsh, but when you place an Ura Zelda title card in the intro, players expect more.
