I enjoyed the first Phazon Hack immensely. Never tried out version 0.2 with its updated graphics. But 0.3 promised to be much more than a visual overhaul. It does more than that. After finishing the game just recently I have quickly come to the conclusion that this is the best Super Metroid hack I’ve ever seen, played, and experienced. This raises the bar for all Super Metroid hacks after it. For all intents and purposes the hack does what was promised. It is still the original “Phazon Hack” that was released awhile ago, there is no doubting that. But 0.3 adds another whole level to it. This isn’t just a map fix for the one bug everyone hated about the first hack. (Which it does fix thankfully.) It even goes beyond fixing the map with hint boards throughout the world.

Good: New items. Lots of ASM. Graphics overhaul of pretty much everything. Exploration based. Items hidden in pretty well thought out places. New enemies. Should be well within the difficulty range that the original presented, just a little bit tougher. Completely new world. A lot added to the original “Phazon Hack.” Has a good length to it, not short at all unless you really know where you’re going.

Bad: Some enemies take way to much time to defeat. A few permanently stuck situations have been found. An error during the final boss allows the player to leave the room immediately upon entering and finish the game without defeating the boss.

Phazon 0.3 has so many new and interesting things added to it that you get to the point where you just expect it to throw something new out around the corner, and it obliges. The graphical edits on the enemies and levels are of a very high quality. Some of the graphics were inspired by other Metroid games, whereas some are just part of Red_M0nk3y’s imagination. One new item in particular will have you searching everywhere to find more of them to see just what it is they do.

It does have a couple of flaws, but these are so overwhelmed by the rest of the hack that they hardly bear any notice by the player. So in the end, this is the must play Super Metroid hack right now. It feels and looks more advanced than any other Super Metroid hack in existence at this time. This was, simply put, a great experience. It will provide ample play time, especially for those who never played the first two versions. I knew the general layout and it took me over five hours to beat. So in conclusion. Try this hack out. It is the best Super Metroid hack to date.
