Hack of Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3

Description:

The first entry in the Wario Land series has been colorised with this hack.

It doesn’t have the quality of the Mario Land color hacks, but it’s still better than the monochrome version.

It doesn’t run on a monochrome Game Boy, only on a Game Boy Color.

Bringing Color to a Colorful Game

Reviewed By: Zetawilk on 08 Aug 2022

Well I finally got around to completing Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land DX, and I’m impressed. Every time I see one of these color-enhanced mods to old Gameboy games, I keep thinking of what colors would fit where in other old titles and wish I could try my hand at this. Wario Land 1 is a classic title, and for a Gameboy game, there’s no shortage of opportunities to really explore and experiment with palettes throughout its 40 stages.

The colors chosen always seem appropriate, and especially delightful is the use of daytime lighting for certain stages–for example, the second train stage takes place at sunset, tackling in the theme that this is indeed a sequel stage to the earlier train course in Parsley Woods. The night-themed levels do an excellent job at providing the ominous forboding before its boss stage.

If there are any errors, the only one I noticed was Wario’s foot for a brief second when he jumps onto the moon at the very end (spoilers for a decades-old game).

Overall, if you’ve been missing the first Wario Land game but haven’t managed to get yourself to play it, this is definitely a great excuse to go ahead and do so.
