Description:
This is a hack that ports over Square-Enix’s official script from their mobile remake nearly perfectly (give or take about 5% due to technical limitations). A hefty script that’s double the size! The title screen is altered to say DRAGON QUEST. The Japanese graphics have also been restored but with more of an authentic “local” twist. Monster, item, and spell names also match current DQ Localization standards. There’s a couple of other tweaks as well. Check the Readme for details. Please note despite all the changes, no gameplay adjustments have been made. This version of the game is still as brutal as ever!

Reviewed By: pocket on 21 May 2022As I said in my review for the first project RE-Quest hack, I got into Dragon Quest a little later on, through mobile ports of the classic games, and of course the more recent releases like the ones on Switch and 3DS. Dragon Quest is a series of consistency, so it would be proper for the translations to be consistent as well. There are a lot of “De-localizations” for RPGs lately, and while that’s a fine option for the people who want that, this is closer to what I prefer when it comes to revisiting a classic game’s script, I feel the official translation adds a touch of personality to an already great series. The original NES one is fine too, but the newer ones are much more palatable and contain more familiar names for monsters, locations, items, spells, ect. And since there are so many new games and ports of old games, you’re likely to run into more walkthroughs that use the newer names anyway.
For the record, I’ve beaten this game on mobile, Switch, and the SNES remake ( pre-bugfix, i managed to avoid that particular bug however ), I always like to explore the roots of games I like, and I heard it was considered quite a feather in your cap if you can beat the original DQII on NES, as it’s a much harder version.
I can confirm the claim that there are no balance tweaks to this hack. It’s still tough as nails. It’s not so bad for most of the game, but then that final stretch before the last boss… I had to grind out an extra 15 levels each for my party members, putting them close to max, and even then, it was still very tough to even make it to the final boss with a decent amount of MP for healing and buffs. ( Humble brag though, I did prevail_)
This is excellent work. No bugs to be found at all as far as I can tell. At first I thought there was an issue with the Prince of Cannock’s illness event not triggering, but as it turns out, that wasn’t in the NES version and was added for the remakes. So, yeah, pretty much flawless and bug free.
I hope the wait for Project RE-Quest 3 and 4 aren’t that far off, because this is my preferred way to play the classic Dragon Quest games, in their original format but with a script consistent with what I know.
