Description:
Super Mario Land DX is a romhack of the original Super Mario Land for the Game Boy that turns the game into a Game Boy Color game. It adds color and changes the graphics to give the game a modern look.
v2.0 (20/04/2022):
- Framerate issues have been addressed. That includes issues in the original game, especially noticeable in 3-2 (hard mode).
- Mario’s sprites have been revamped. They are mostly the same size as the originals.
- Mario’s relative position when jumping has been fixed. This was responsible for the weird collision issues in v1.0 (yeah, it wasn’t the sprites).
- Luigi has been added. He has slightly different physics.
- Old graphics are now an option. Not all graphics are unchanged, as it mostly affects the sprites, but this should be good enough for people who didn’t like the new ones.
- A shortcut to difficult mode has been added.
- New palette for Superball Mario/Luigi.
- New animation for Super Mario/Luigi when looking up.
- New animation for Super Mario/Luigi when entering a pipe.
- Options menu added to accommodate the new options.
- Battery added to permanently save your options, top score and level selection.
- Every single stage’s colors have been tweaked.
- An incompatibility screen for the original Game Boy has been added.
- Hundreds of minor (and not so minor) changes and fixes.

Color me impressed.
Reviewed By: tsubasaplayer16 on 26 Apr 2022Coming from the great but a bit rough 1.0 release to the new 2.0 release was a huge, and I mean HUGE jump in features and fixes. Right off the bat selecting the harder difficulty and completing it would trigger the level select. Very nice. Now I don’t have to do a regular playthrough again! AND a battery save keeps that! No need for save states to jump to the level select anymore! I thought the “new” sprites was a bit bulky when dealing with stomping enemies, but he’s manageable when I got the hang of it. Seeing that there’s an option to enable the old graphics was great to see, and with the proper color palettes too. I had a blast playing through it the first time and this is no exception now with the new stuff going for it.
I still feel like the credits still having missing characters from 1.0 still makes the hack a liiiiittle rough on the edges (idk if playing it on original hardware + flash cart makes a difference), but why care when there’s a whole lot of positives going for it? This hack is just a straight upgrade from the original, although as I said, the credit names got a bit messed up, but what can you do. It’s great!
(Played on original hardware with an Everdrive GB X7.)
