Game Description:
You know, every once in a while, Game Gear games can be pretty damn sweet. Take this here Sylvan Tale game for example. Action RPGs (such as this one) are rare, and GOOD action RPGs are rare indeed. This is just the tip of the iceberg as to why Sylvan Tale is cool. Actually it’s pretty much the entire reason; it’s a damn fine action RPG. The music is simply awesome, especially considering the system (with one small exception!), the graphics are very well done, and the gameplay’s there. It’s ALL there. There’s a plot too, but it doesn’t matter. Who cares? Swing your sword around and kill things! That’s what life’s all about goddammit!
Translation Description:
This zip file comes with two patches. The STMUSIC.IPS file changes the menu music to a much less annoying tune. Trust me, you’ll want that patch. The SYLVANTL.IPS file contains the “untouched” English translation, for you purist freaks.
The screenshots are all from VERY early on because I kept forgetting to save my game. And the screenshots really suck too. But it gives you a good idea of how sweet the game is. Go play the game.
Recently, Gideon Zhi has teamed up with z80gaiden to improve the patch, and hopes to soon offer a new release with an improved script, a VWF, two-line item names and translated map graphics.

Just brilliant !
Reviewed By: Ligeia on 21 Mar 2022I decided to give this game a try after reading the warm recommendation on the Aeon Genesis website. I don’t regret it. It’s a pretty neat action RPG, bearing some similarities to Zelda but with its own charm and identity. It looks lovely for a 1995 handheld game and the music is great, with the notable exception of the menu music which fortunately can be changed with an optional patch.
The game focuses on gameplay and has interesting mechanics. It’s rather short and the last part seems a bit rushed, but it’s a 95 handheld game. I saw criticism about the short length of the labyrinths, but I think it works really well for short play sessions. You don’t need to spend several hours every time you wanna play this game. It’s rather light on story but I think sometimes that less verbose is better.
Now, about the translation : it’s really well done and complete, only the map text isn’t translated but it’s not a big issue. Otherwise it looks like a professional localization and you can try the game knowing you’ll have a nice experience. Seriously, try it !
