As the name and platform suggest, this is a watered-down version Lunar for Game Gear. Can’t say much about this game, since it’s not really translated yet. So, yeah.
According to EsperKnight of the SGST team - the group who originally had control of the project - this patch was twelve years in the making! Aeon Genesis only inherited it about a year and a half ago, and most of that was spent editing the text to bring it up to speed. (The actual romhacking work was a pretty simple affair.) But here we are, finally at the release date.

Lunar: Walking School was released for the Game Gear back in the day and because of the limitations of the console, the game is barely a true Lunar title.
The classic Lunar battle system is gone and replaced with a more Dragon Quest like system. The Battle systems saving grace is that it is very fast paced and gaining levels takes almost no time at all. It’s actually fun in its simplicity.
The story does take place in the Lunar universe. The story is fairly simple as it involves the misadventures of two young girls learning magic at a magic school on a floating island. The story is fairly loose and the “actual” storyline doesn’t really start until more than halfway through the game. Since the story takes place a few hundred years before the events of Lunar: Silver Star Story, the games main antagonist is The Vile Tribe.
Since there were many limitations on the Game Gear the graphics are 8 Bit and look like a title in the Dragon Quest series for the NES. Having said that, the graphics aren’t horrible, just limited. Actually, the dungeons are well designed and very maze like.
Don’t be expecting a Lunar like soundtrack. Because of the sound engine for the Game Gear the music and sound is just OK. The music itself ranges from as well done as it can get to horribly obnoxious. Just let the town music repeat over and over again and you’ll see what I mean. The dungeon music, on the other hand, is not bad at all.
The translation is fully playable but still not without some minor issues. For example, when referencing the number two, two is spelled “to”. There are several other minor mistakes but it certainly won’t take away from the game play.
Overall Lunar: Walking School is not a Lunar masterpiece. It’s very short (I beat it within 10 hours), and doesn’t fully represent the series because of its very different battle system compared to the series. Having said that, this game is easily much better then Phantasy Star Gaidan for the Game Gear and better than most other titles for the console as well.
