Game Description:

Nekketsu Oyako by TechnoSoft (or alternately Tecno Soft) – not to be confused with the other Nekketsu games, starring Kunio, by Technos – is a rather average Final Fight clone beatemup. You’ve got your three characters, the big buff slowpoke, the fast but weak girl, and the all around average guy, and they walk through a bunch of levels beating the puss out of stuff for some reason or another.

Graphically, the game is… well, sub-par for the Playstation, but considering that it was one of the first titles to grace the system (and considering that it was up against the likes of Funky Horror Band for Sega CD as a contender for “worst near-launch title graphics”) I’d say it did quite well. The sound is, as well, nothing to write home about. Neither is the gameplay. In fact, the whole thing just screams of average, and it would remain so if it took itself seriously. As it is, the amount of bizarre doesn’t quite reach the level of Gourmet Sentai Barayarou for the SNES, with its nose-rocket-propelled moai heads and dance button, but it comes sort of close, with half of the second level being inside a whale (which eats you at the end of the first.) Inside the whale you’ll find boxing octopi and blobs of water with “H2O” written on ‘em. Weird.

It deserves some playtime though, even if the lack of Kunio is a bit of a disappointment. Given the… closeness of the game title and company name, I think TechnoSoft was specifically aiming to confuse people into thinking that this was a Kunio game, but it’s not. Shame on you, TechnoSoft! That’s bad business that is!

This addendum patch for version 1.0d of https://www.romhacking.net/translations/757/ simply makes the patch compatible with mednafen and redump. The files are byte for byte identical, except psx-mode2 wasn’t able to insert the info.txt file in the root of the cd image, so it’s reproduced in the paragraphs above. Uses xdelta3 to patch.

to patch with xdelta3: xdelta3 -d -s “Nekketsu Oyako (Japan).bin” “Nekketsu Oyako (Japan).xdelta” “new.bin”

and then rename “Nekketsu Oyako (Japan).bin” to “backup.bin” and “new.bin” to “Nekketsu Oyako (Japan).bin”.

The original readme is bundled as readme_original.txt.

A neat beat-em-up now playable in English

I’m glad this translation exists, as it helped me give this game another shot. I initially played Nekketsu Oyako untranslated a while back, and wasn’t all that impressed. The game played slower than I expected, and playing as the sluggish “brute” character didn’t help my first impression of the game. I got to the whale-level boss and just stopped playing at that point, moving on to better games. However, when I learned that this translation existed recently, I decided to give it another try. Being able to read the title screen, menus, story, and character bios helped me get a better impression of the game my second time around, and that was just enough for me to commit to playing it all the way through. I chose the well-rounded character and ended up appreciating the game for what it was: a competently made beat-em-up with slower-paced, yet still enjoyable gameplay. I wouldn’t have given this another shot if it wasn’t for this translation, so I would recommend it to anyone wishing to try out a little PS1 hidden gem.
