HELLWALKER By MetalMachine


This is a complete “full game” hack of the Legend of Zelda, including:

  • Title/Intro/Outro/Credits
  • Overworld
  • Dungeons (every dungeon even has a unique theme)
  • All graphics
  • All music
  • Many sound effects

Some things to know:

  • The story is not Zelda universe-related at all.
  • This should work on any hardware or emulator that runs vanilla LoZ.
  • This is intended to be difficult. Not crazy hard, but challenging.
  • There are a handful of in-game mechanics new/different from vanilla LoZ.
  • The up+a sequence, saving, retrying, continuing work as normal.
  • Block-clipping and screen-wrapping have been patched out.

This hack is very large and is not intended to be a quick play. It drastically transforms LoZ into what amounts to be a completely new game, using an enhanced version of the LoZ engine.

I believe this hack is kinda underrated; it deserves a little more feedback. Overall it was very creative, and i loved all the challenging aspects. I’m gonna be honest, though - i wouldnt play it to the end if it wasnt for a full gameplay that is available on youtube. I had to look into it to solve all the cryptic parts i got stuck. Some of these parts were fair, like the Ankh that was hiding under a stone that i haven’t checked because an invencible boss was surrounding it.

Others cryptic parts weren’t fair, though: one of the dungeons was accessible through a very hidden passage that i would NEVER find out… you had to walk through a wall that had NO signs of being passable. Because of it, i went to another dungeon ahead of it, but couldn’t pass because i needed the upgraded sword to kill the semiboss (again, i wouldn’t know any of it without cheking a gameplay). I also didn’t know i could push one block above the other and lost many time circling the same dungeon… maybe a npc could make it clear somehow. I also lose time in another dungeon because i didn’t know i could warp between rooms. Once i got used to all of it, though, the game went very smoothly.

That is, until the last dungeon. I gladly explored 100% of the world map and the other dungeons, but didn’t care to 100% explore this last dungeon. It is, at the same time, too big and linear; when i tried to explore it, i was send back to a room and had to go through a long way again. And believe me, every room is FULL of monsters that you NEED to kill. If you die too ahead, you have to go through all of it again without ANY shortcuts. I mean, i explored as better as i could and couldn’t find the map and the treasure (if there is any). I believe the treasure is the sand of time, that maybe help at the last boss. So, although i hate to use save states, i used it at the last boss after dying twice and without the dungeon’s item. I stabbed everywhere in the dark and prayed to kill him. It was awful. I just wanted to finish this hell of a dungeon. In short: never make a dungeon that, at the same time, demands exploration, is too big *AND* too linear, besides having infinite rooms full of monsters and troll stairs that send you all the way back.

All the critics aparts, it was a very fun experience. It really made me feel like playing a brand new zelda clone. The music is AWESOME. I also loved the bosses literally screaming. A sequel to it would be pretty cool, maybe with a darker aesthetic. I would play it right away!
