Seiken Densetsu 3 / Trials of Mana - Black Rabite

Hack of Trials of Mana

Description:

Seiken Densetsu 3 / Trials of Mana – Black Rabite

v1.5, by hmsong

Originally, Black Rabite was a secret boss that you can only encounter in Duran/Angela path. This patch makes it so you can encounter it in all routes in the final Mana Holyland (the original Black Rabite is still available only in Duran/Angela route). It is in a semi-hidden location, so that you don’t accidentally come across it and consequently get your whole party wiped out. Hint: Search the corners of the new parts of the Mana Holyland. You get the cool beginning script and BGM too (only once – either the original or the new Black Rabite, but not both).

In addition, Black Rabite now gives massive EXP – a whooping 30,060 EXP! And just like the original game, it may drop the Moogle Badge. On the other hand, its melee power has increased greatly. It is a secret boss after all – it better be difficult.

There are two patches. Pick one:

  • “One-time” is the same as the original game, where if you kill the Black Rabite (in either Dragon’s Hole or Mana Holyland), it stays dead.
  • “Respawn” makes the Black Rabite respawn after you leave the map (in both Dragon’s Hole and Mana Holyland), meaning you can fight it as many times as you want to farm EXP and Moogle Badges.

WARNING: For both the original and the new Black Rabite fights, you are now locked in the room – no cheap escaping! The exit permanently opens up after you kill it the first time.

BIG thanks to Map Jester (https://www.romhacking.net/utilities/986/). Map Jester is a SD3 map editing tool. 90+% of map information for SD3 for this patch came from using this tool.

Applying Notes:

  • This is specifically for No Header ROM. If you only have a Headered ROM, then you can use TUSH (https://www.romhacking.net/utilities/608/) to remove the header.
  • Compatible with the English NCorlett-translation patch. But again, you need a No Header ROM. If you are using the translation patch from Romhacking.net, then you need to apply the translation to a Headered ROM first, then use TUSH to remove the header. And then you can apply these patches.
  • Compatible with the new Trials of Mana ROM, released in 2019. But again, you need a No Header ROM.

There are other hacks for Seiken Densetsu 3 that you should check out:

Sin of Mana

  • This changes the contents of the game in many ways, such as equipment bonus, level-up change, class balance, difficulty, boss behaviors, running in battles, MP regeneration, dungeon format, and tons of bug fixes. It’s a completely new game though, since so much has changed, and the game progress is slightly different.
  • There is also a forum (google “Sin of Mana forum”), where you can ask the creator (praetarius5018) numerous questions. He is very helpful, and even helps you to create your own hack. He certainly did for me.
  • Sin of Mana is NOT compatible with the new Trials of Mana.
  • Sin of Mana is NOT compatible with hmsong’s patches.

Please leave comments or reviews. This would give the creator ideas on what is good or not, and depending on the situation, even revise the patches.

Good, but maybe...

Reviewed By: soul_knight on 09 Oct 2021

I emailed the author earlier with my opinion and suggestions, and they wanted me to write an honest review (including the things which I disagree with them), so I shall do so.

Obviously, this is great. Black Rabite was one of the most unique thing about SD3. So I’m happy to see this guy being available in all routes. Good job in hiding this guy well. Not easy to find, but not impossible-to-find-without-guide. And locking the door definitely makes the fight way more scary. And because of its increase in its attack power, that thing is scary. A very much secret-boss worthy guy.

One flaw though (imho that some people may not share). The author made it so that BR can be encountered infinite times (even though you can make it a one-time fight). That takes out the “uniqueness” of the fight. The author told me that they did it, so that players can get the Moogle Badge if they don’t get it the first time, but I feel like that takes out the novelty of BR fight. I mean, players can reset the game if they don’t get the Moogle Badge.

The author also made it so that BR drops lots of exp. That essentially makes BR into a EXP farm monster. That’s… not a great idea, I think. The author told me that they made it that way, because the plot final boss would be a cakewalk if I can beat BR. That’s true, I suppose, but still…

Is it just me who feels that? I want to hear what everyone else thinks.

Still, very much recommended.
