The Legend of Zelda: 3rd & 4th Quest

Hack of The Legend of Zelda

Description:

The Legend of Zelda - 3rd & 4th Quest

The purpose of the hack is to create a 3rd/4th Quest for the game. Q3 is similar in style to the original 1Q, but 4Q takes more liberties. There’s no new graphics or any of that stuff. It’s meant to feel like an extension of the original game, as if development continued on and two more quests were created. This has been pretty extensively play-tested by forum members.

  • Slightly modified overworlds for both quests
  • 8 new dungeons in new locations
  • Items shuffled around between dungeons
  • Shops changed
  • Important locations altered
  • Off-map rooms in dungeons (and overlapping screens)
  • 2nd Quest: lots of hunting for heart containers!

Also, as a warning: There’s an area in Level 9 (1Q) where it seems impossible to get to…but it’s possible without resorting to cheats/glitches. HAVE FUN!

A very good Zelda 1 hack that deserves its name

Reviewed By: netux on 18 Sep 2021

First of all let me tell I enjoyed a lot this hack. This is my first review in this site mostly because I think this hack deserve it :)

Its difficulty is a bit higher than the original in 3rd and in 4th is a bit lower than 2nd quest.

I liked a lot the overlapping sections on the dungeons (I haven’t seen that feature before) and also the distribution, structure and secrets on them.

The inaccessible area in 9th dungeon in the 3rd quest was very clever :)

Overworld is also good but a bit bland on 4th quest, maybe because of some decisions of having so many heart containers around and very few within the dungeons, hard to tell…

I didn’t like not having the blue candle in 4th quest (within a dungeon or in a shop) and not having a old woman clue for the Lostwoods is a bad decision because (maybe) it assumes you already know the correct path from the 3rd quest, which is not necessarily true since you can start right away on 4th like you can do it in the original 2nd. And that forces the player to go into the wild looking for a candle across the entire map in order to access an early dungeon. I think it can do in 4th similar to what it was done in 3rd quest in this matter.

For some reason 5th and 6th dungeon in the 4th quest are harder than 7th and 8th… Also, not sure what’s exactly the point of having a wooden sword in a late dungeon in 4th quest? is this a bug or intended?

I faced some bugs that the author might like to fix:

  • The Zora located 2 screens left of the start screen is garbled.
  • The 3rd dungeon in the 4th quest doesn’t have a map.
  • There is a stair in the 9th dungeon of the 3rd quest that when you enter instead of the normal passageway it shows an empty item room and when you try to return you get stuck in the screen forcing you to restart the game. I have some screenshot of this if you are interested. Not sure if this is something related to fceux emulator I used to play since I didn’t try another one. I was able to overcome the issue simply by not entering into this stair.

And well I can finally say that overall, 3rd quest was much better for me than the 4th but I enjoyed a lot both. I can easily recommend this hack to everyone. I give it 8/10 points to it.
