Refill Weapon after Death

Hack of Mega Man 5

Description:

This patch is meant to make the game a bit easier and less frustrating. Applying this patch to Mega Man 5 will make the weapon energy of all weapons restore fully whenever a life is lost. This mechanic is officially applied in Mega Man games for the PS1 and later.

Situations where this primarily affects the game:

  • Final stages (where mobility items are mandatory for progress)
  • Boss battles (running out of weapon energy)

Mmm... A Little Too Full...

Reviewed By: Eldrethor on 17 Sep 2021

Thirteen 1355’s Refill hacks were valuable for the first three games in the series, but Mega Man 5 is where the post-death refills start to lose their value for reasons that trace back to the design of the game.

The thing is that this version of the Charged Shot is so grossly overpowered that it’s the best weapon for nearly everything, outclassing any weapons that you earn, and completely upheaving the boss orders. Even without the proper weapon, each boss has predictable attack patterns that leave plenty of room for dodging, so you can pick up on telegraphs, and hit them with Charged Shots when they’re wide open. This means that running out of weapon energy isn’t much of a setback, so refills aren’t nearly as vital as they were before.

This hack does offer some saving grace in the rare instances where Rush is required in a large capacity, but those situations aren’t common, and this game also has the new M-Tank that restores all weapon energy, though you’re restricted to carrying just one at a time.

Is the Refill hack worth it for Mega Man 5? I think it is, but it’s not nearly as significant as in past games. Just as before, if you know the ins and outs of the game, it won’t affect you much. Still, it shines during those moments when Rush is crucial, and when it shines, it shines brightly. This one gets a recommendation.
