Hack of Sunman
Hack of Sunman
|Released By||Crying Onion|
|Patching Information||No Special Requirements|
|Hack Release Date||21 April 2019|
|Last Modified||22 April 2019|
This hack is titled only “Superman”, pretending to be the official game and not the mediocre one of Kemco (the main character only needs a skateboard to be Dr. Slump version).
It’s based on Pacnsacdave’s hack “Superman 2 - Lex Luthor Edition” (all the credit for him), but includes important changes:
- Intro and title screen are replaced. Now the enemy to beat is Darkseid.
- Final boss sprites are replaced.
- Many generic thugs are replaced too for enemies from the comic-books, like the Parademon troops, Metallo or Doomsday.
- Minor changes on text to contextualize the new Nemesis on the game.
Note: Apply patch over the pre-patched Superman 2 - Lex Luthor Edition ROM.

Superman Gets His Day In The SunReviewed By: Eldrethor on 27 Aug 2021
I have to give a lot of credit to pacnsacdave for his extensive work on converting Sunman back to its rightful state as a Superman game, but it’s nice to see Crying Onion take the helm and push it even further.
As a whole, this hack is just a graphical touchup of a small handful of elements, but for what it does, it does it very well. Right from the start, Darkseid’s floating head and the revamped still image of Superman look gorgeous, with both sporting a modern art style that looks great. Removing the “II” from the title screen was an interesting choice, but it makes sense when considering that this game feels like a standalone title, with no ties to the 1981 movie or Kemco’s 1988 Superman. The new enemy sprites look just as good; large with an impressive amount of fine detail, and it’s nice to see a few familiar characters amidst the generic killer robots and whatnot.
My only real nitpick for this hack is the uneven positioning of the headline in the “SEID WINS” screen that appears when you lose all of your lives. It’s also strangely jarring to see the game refer to the fearsome and mighty Darkseid as “SEID”. To be fair though, even if this gets cleaned up, the rest of the game is still an unpolished prototype anyway.
Since licensors love making sure that you know that its their property, I’d also recommend adding a “TM” to the Superman logo in the title screen, further cementing that “official release” authenticity.
From this point forward, it would be great if the gameplay could be refined to a cleaner state, but that’s a whole other issue entirely. Overall, this an impressive improvement hack that gives the game’s graphics a modern touch that brings it closer to how an official release would have looked.
