Reduce Time Penalty

Hack of Pokémon Picross

The penalty for making an error in a puzzle is 1 minute for your first mistake, which doubles every error until you hit 8 minutes for each mistake max. Considering they expect you to finish the levels between 1 and 5 minutes total, this is incredibly harsh, and basically requires you to not make any errors if you want to beat par. This patch lowers this penalty - now your first mistake only costs 10 seconds, and it doubles in the same fashion until you hit 40 seconds maximum.

A perfect little fix for the biggest frustration in this game!

Reviewed By: Verne on 29 Jun 2021

I usually hate when Picross games penalize me for making a mistake, as I prefer to figure out where and when I went wrong on my own. Additionally, my motor control is rather poor, and so I’ll often hit the wrong button or hold it too long when filling lines. This has always been a small annoyance, but tolerable.

However…I’ve finally gotten around to playing Pokémon Picross on my GBC, and my god, the Par is *brutal*. Easy enough to make if you’re good at Picross, but just one mishap ruins the whole puzzle, oftentimes, forcing you to restart. Now, you could use save states for this (I sometimes use them for it on Super Mario’s Picross on Switch, for instance), but since I play on real hardware, that’s not an option. I actually came to this site looking for a Spaceworld ‘97 translation, but instead I found this, and it’s a godsend! I made an account just to review it.

I have applied this on top of an English translation patch, and it works flawlessly! Now I don’t have to sweat it if I accidentally mark the wrong cell. I can’t fix my own errors, still, like you can in the Wario side of the Mario’s Picross series (and maybe later puzzles in this have that? I haven’t beaten it yet!), but at least I don’t have puzzles ruined because my hands are terrible!

Thanks for this!!
