DK64 KongQuest

Hack of Donkey Kong 64

DK64 KongQuest is a first of its kind hack for DK64. By modifying the level’s setup files (for object placement within levels) in the ROM, and stitching them together with some assembly code, this is a linear hack with 5 levels.

Included is:

  • 1 Level per Kong
  • 25 Colored Bananas per Kong
  • 1 Golden Banana per Kong
  • 1 Banana Coin per Kong

Special thanks to:

  • Isotarge, for Scripthawk object analysis, and general help with assembly
  • Theballaam96, for object analysis tools, setup file help, and more
  • TJ, for testing and encouragement
  • Mittenz, for assembly help
  • The DK64 Decomp Crew
  • The DK64 Randomizer Discord
  • 2dos, for promotion

Hope you enjoy it :)

Ruined by Poor Camera Controls and Crashing

While I can respect the hard work that went into this, the hack just isn’t fun to play. Neither DK64’s character controls or it’s camera were built for tight platforming which DK’s section was full of. Having to rely on savestates because I have no guarantee that the camera won’t throw off my jump onto a small platform or DK won’t slip a little after his jump and fall off isn’t fun in the slightest. Rather than a test of skill it feels more like a test of luck.

The reliance on glitches seems odd as it’s not mentioned here. I don’t think in DK’s case someone familiar with the game who hasn’t seen the speedrunning would think to Moon Jump to a stack of Bananas unless the devs thought the player should think to trust the poor camera and dive down from the top of the stage and redo everything they’ve just done for a stack of Bananas. Nor would a player see an object sticking out of the wall in Frantic Factory and think “hey, maybe when Diddy grabs that seemingly random part sticking out he can climb through the wall!”

Unfortunately Diddy’s section is as far as I got. The game consistently crashed shortly after learning how to pick up barrels so I couldn’t progress any further.
