Shin Megami Tensei

Game Boy Advance

Game Description:

Shin Megami Tensei is an role playing game for the Game Boy Advance.

Translation Description:

This translation ports the English script of the officially localized iOS version of Shin Megami Tensei to GBA. All in-game dialogue text, battle text, spell/item/demon names etc. are translated as in the iOS version, with the sole exception of BGM titles in the Music Theater (an accessory function unlocked by clearing the game once). In addition, this patch enables small-letter names for human characters, a function not present in the iOS localization.

This archive also includes an optional font patch by FlamePurge, which makes several 16×8 (big dialogue font) letters (A B M W X a c k t) look more even.

Note that in order to use this patch, both the Japanese GBA rom and the English iOS rom need to be prepared. Please see instructions in the Readme.txt file.

  • Update v1.3b: Fixed a couple of texts in elevators and Weapon shops.
  • Update v1.3: The currency symbol issue (after battle) has been fixed. Several other text issues have been fixed. The patcher has been updated. FlamePurge’s font hack is now included.
  • Update v1.2: The currency symbol issue (after battle) has been fixed (but not working as intended).
  • Update v1.1a: Several text issues have been fixed.

Any further issues can be reported on the GitHub page of this project: https://github.com/gymzatan/SMT1-iOS-to-GBA/

The much needed translation for the better version of this game!

Reviewed By: P41R47 on 15 Jun 2021

I can’t say much besides that I’m really thankful to the author and the hackers for this amazing translation. Atlus, as always, did a dickish move restricting the re-release of Shin Megami Tensei I only for IOS. But now, thanks to this patch, we have that translation available to be played on every emulator or proper GBA via flash cart.

About the patch, only thing that I notice is the complicate to use patching mechanic. Most people are used to just use ips, beat or xdelta formats, so using the command line to make the patching process was kinda tedious, difficult and with the possibilities of having a lot of error in the process. I recommend the authors of this hack to create a little patching program, or at least, make use of a way less complicated patching process.

The translation is the same as in the IOS version, its the official one, so its the best we could have from Atlus, properly. The Aeon Genesis translation from the SF version is a little better, but it doesn’t cover the added content.

One things that could be for a future hack or for another hacker to implement as an improvement is to change the GBA music for the better sounding SF version, as the GBA versions has a lot of compression an it tends to crackle here and there sometimes.

Aside from that, this is a dream come true for al Megaten Fans out there. And its not a distant dream to see the GBA version of SMT II also translated in a near future.

Thank you, guys! Now I will continue playing this awesome translation patch ;)
