New Super Mario Advance + Take 2

Hack of New Super Mario Bros.

Description:

New Super Mario Advance + Take 2 is a fully enhanced remake of New Super Mario Bros. 2: Doki Doki Panic!! Edition - an old hack which took inspiration from Super Mario Bros. 2.

New levels have been added, including the entirety of Super Mario Bros. 2- allowing players to explore the dream world of Subcon with the traditional Mario gameplay that is now a staple of the series.

This hack allows players to play as either Mario, Luigi or Toad- three of the four original cast members of Super Mario Bros. 2.

It's an okay hack

Although this hack doesn’t do a lot different in regards to mechanics, it does add a boatload of new levels, a few new graphics, and faithful recreations of SMB2 music tracks along the way. Those levels are fun for a good while, but not infallible. The levels included here that I remember from Super Mario Bros. 2 (Doki Doki Panic) are well designed with pretty good star coin placements. However, there are several levels I don’t recognize at all (which may or may not be original levels) that aren’t as well designed (which includes the star coin placements). This is made even more apparent when a majority of the levels in World 3 are repeated in World 4 (This may also be the case for World 6 and 7, but I skipped World 7 because I was getting tired of trying to play the game 100% at that point). I understand that trying to fill this game with the maximum amount of content is challenging, but if some of the levels were better designed, it would have made for a smoother experience. Adding good powerups to levels would have added to that smoother experience, as the only way you can get anything besides a mushroom is by visiting a Toad House. Some of these levels almost require a Fire Flower to get through safely, so it would have been nice to see some variety in powerup placement (again, I understand that it’s trying to be faithful to the game it’s based off of).

Overall, I had a pretty good time playing this hack, but became well worn out by the the end of the 5th World and skipped half of the 6th world and all of the 7th World in an attempt to finish the game.
