Rockman 2: Basic Master is a complete level hack of Rockman 2 for the NES. New music, new (and old) enemies, different boss behaviors, and more.
Note: v1.2 (05/19/2021) is now Available!
- When scrolling up and down, use some emulators such as Mesen and Nestopia. Fixed a bug that the screen is disturbed

- If you press Select + Start with “EXIT” selected on the weapon selection screen, you can escape from the current stage and view your current password.
- The energy balancer is the initial equipment. If the currently equipped weapon recovery has the highest priority and there is a recovery surplus, it is assigned to other weapon recovery in ascending order of energy.

So, I should start off by saying that I’ve only played 4 levels so far, but I just want to point out something that I’ve noticed immediately.
I really enjoy seeing non-MM2 bosses in this hack. I’ve played four levels so far (started with Ring Man and made my way clockwise) and I feel like, after the backlash regarding the difficulty of Unique Harassment, Tatsu might’ve played it too safe here. I really liked the challenge in Basic Master before, but now, the levels are way too casual. There’s almost no challenge in them at all. I don’t understand the need to take out the tremendous Yoku blocks sections from Metal/Ring Man’s stage, or replacing the really fast enemies from the acid rain section of Wood/Snake Man’s stage with really slow ones.
ALSO, WHAT’S UP WITH ALL THE LIFE TANKS SCATTERED AROUND THE LEVELS? I feel as if I were playing Mega Man 10 easy mode, which spams Yashichis all over the place.
The bosses so far seem interesting, but there’s one HUGE flaw - it appears that every Robot Master gets annihilated by the Ring Boomerang, which reduces the challenge of those fights to zero.
The addition of the Energy Balancer is always a welcome one, and I also like Item 1, which summons Eddie giving you a choice of getting either a Life Tank or a Weapon Tank.
I will update this review after I complete the game. So far though, I heavily recommend ver. 1.0, but I’m not a fan of ver. 1.1.
Update: I finished the game in about 50 minutes (and I usually take over an hour to beat the original games). Gotta say it’s WAY too easy. THE WEAPONS ARE EXTREMELY BROKEN. I only really used the Ring Boomerang, which destroys every single boss in the game.
The levels are mindlessly easy. There’s no challenge at all, every single interesting gimmick and stage design has been completely destroyed. The stages feel MMX3 like, aka, empty. There way too many sections where you can just casually walk right without any enemies threatening you.
I feel like it would’ve been better if Tatsu just made a new hack instead of updating BM.
I also feel like Tatsu is now confused about what their hacks should be like. Rockman 6 Unique Harassment was heavily criticized because of its difficulty (for the record, I was fine with it), then Tatsu went ahead and updated the game to be a bit too easy, and now updated BM to be EXTREMELY EASY.
If Tatsu wants to cater to the people who whine every time a ROMHack is even slightly challenging, then I guess that’s fine. However, it should be done logically, like in Voyage, for example.
All in all, I’m not sure how to feel about this update. I definitely prefer the original version of the game. And, I’m not sure what Tatsu wanted to achieve with this update. On one hand, the bosses are well made (if you fight them Buster Only that is), but on the other hand, the stages are so bland and easy, and the bosses can be annihilated with almost no effort, which makes the game very unappealing in my opinion.
I still heavily recommend the original version, however, I can’t recommend the updated one. It’s way too easy, and the weapons are beyond broken. It’s a shame ‘cause I always liked Tatsu’s work.
