SMB3 - Extended Edition

Hack of Super Mario Bros. 3

Description:

A patch thought to be long lost to the void of the internet, it’s the return of ShaneM’s “Super Mario Bros. 3 Extended Edition”!

This is a purification work. This is a hack of SMB3 that fixes glitches and restores beta features. The original SMB3 had 90 levels, while this one has 107. Most of the lost levels have been restored, while adding 3 e-levels from the GBA version: Super Mario Advance 4. The lost Hammer Bros. of World 7 has also been restored. Previously unused tiles and graphics have been utilized. The biggest feature: the lost level “Parabeetle Plains”! The new levels have been given an unused Ghost House sprite on the overworld maps. Features, as well as the original damage system have been restored from the original Japanese version, too.

There are two lost enemies, too: gold Cheep-cheeps and green Parabeetles.

Patches have been made for both the PRG0 & PRG1 ROMs.

Wow, if that’s what the original developers meant, I’m quite disappointed. I’m actually glad that those lost levels were removed from the game, the overall experience felt broken for me. The difficulty is no problem, I’m accustomed to the Japanese damage system, but the aesthetic and layout of the stages are very different compared with the rest of the levels, so you won’t feel that they’re coherent with the map’s theme. But if you’re looking for some challenge, this is your kind of game. You can play this patch out of curiosity, but for me, I didn’t feel I missed anything of value.

P.S.: Too many parabeetles levels! What were you thinking, Nintendo?! Also, if you love water levels, this will be your game. There are lots of them. Yay.
