From Below

NES

Description:

FROM BELOW is a falling block puzzle game featuring:

Soft Drops Hard Drops Wall Kicks T-Spins Lock Delay 3 modes of play: Kraken Battle Mode

The signature mode of FROM BELOW. Battle the Kraken by clear lines across the onslaught of attacking Kraken Tentacles. The Tentacles push more blocks onto the screen every few seconds, forcing to act quickly, and strategize on an every changing board.

Classic Mode

The classic block falling mechanics you know and love without any new gimicks. Modernize for 2020, with Hard Drops, Lock Delay, and more, making this (hopefully) the best feeling puzzle game on the NES!

Turn Based Kraken Battle Mode

Similar to “Kraken Battle Mode”, but instead of the Kraken attacking every few seconds, it advances its tentacle every time you drop a piece. Make every move count, as this move favors slow, deliberate play!

A highly-polished must-have puzzler.

From Below is an incredibly well-made and polished homebrew release that feels more like a retail title from late in the NES era than a homebrew project. I have no particular attachment to NES Tetris and had always leaned towards the Game Boy version, but this game has made me a convert!

The game plays fantastically, with tight controls and all of the niceties that are now standard in modern installments of the Tetris series, plus a hefty dose of its own personality both in the form of its visual style and, more so, from the modes (and the monster) that give the game its name.

The Kraken is an unexpected addition to a puzzle game like this, and I didn’t expect it to make the game as fun and as hectic as it does - it’s almost like merging the Game & Watch game Octopus with Tetris. Thus far, I’ve found myself playing the Kraken modes more than the standard one, but all of the modes are enjoyable in their own ways, and I’m glad to have them all.

The music is great, sounding a lot like the chiptune stylings of indie titles on modern consoles, with an addictive tune during gameplay, and a suitably frantic theme for when the blocks are piling up too high. The sound-effects are fitting, too. (Speaking of music, I couldn’t help but read the “Soft Drops Hard Drops Wall Kicks T-Spins Lock Delay 3 modes of play” part of the description to the tune of Billy Joel’s We Didn’t Start The Fire. I don’t know whether or not this was intentional, but I found it amusing nonetheless.)

If you enjoy puzzle games, and particularly if you enjoy Tetris, then you owe it to yourself to check out From Below, as it is excellent.

I tested this game in the versions of RetroPie for both the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and the Raspberry Pi Zero W, and it worked as it should with both.
