Daikaijuu Monogatari

Super Nintendo

Game Description:

Daikaijuu Monogatari is a role playing game for the Super Nintendo.

Translation Description:

In a mystical world far away, a legendary race of beings called Shell Monsters dwell. These are not those sorts of monsters that threaten other life forms, though. Just the opposite. Instead, these special “people” live extremely long lives and enjoy mysterious powers that certain heroes – sometimes reluctantly – use against tyrants that threaten the peaceful existence of their World of Shelldorado!

Such a threat has arisen recently – a fiend known as “Fat Badger – and Elder Hermit Crab of Shell Village is about to invoke an ancient chant that elders must memorize, to summon a human hero from another world that is quite distant from Shelldorado. Soon, the perplexed would-be hero, whether he wants to or not, will embark on an ocean voyage in the flimsy Puka shell craft, hoping to locate his madcap shell hero companions who somehow seem to be drifting far afield from their assigned duties!

Worth A Shot But Know What You're Getting

Reviewed By: Eldrethor on 24 Feb 2021

I have very mixed feelings about this translation, with the crux being Wildbill’s treatment of the original script.

As others have mentioned, he took some wild liberties with the game’s script, having injected some political remarks in places where they didn’t exist in the Japanese version. A number of NPCs speak of government intrusion, and there is some condemning dialogue about liberals, intrusion of freedoms, health care, etc. Regardless of right or wrong, it’s a pretty dishonest move when a translator inserts his own personal views into any medium and calls it a “translation”.

Aside from being of poor taste, the dialogue in question is too far a departure from the original Japanese script, and adds no significance to the game’s world or story. If anything, the last thing that anyone wants is to be reminded of the heated liberal-vs-conservative rants that have been everywhere.

It’s a shame that the translation features such a glaring problem because for what it is, it’s not bad. The language is very Working-Designs-cartoony, which is a nice callback for those who like that particular style, but personally, the generous use of puns and real-world pop culture references is not for me. The typeface is clear and legible, the menus and combat UI are well done, and the team did a very clean job overall. Although you aren’t getting a constant barrage of cringeworthy political ramblings, they do pop up at some key points, and it’s immersion-breaking when they do happen.

Overall, it’s a decent translation for what it is, one that’s very robust and playable from start to finish. I’d rather that the translator not use the game as his personal soapbox for political commentary, but if you can look past that, it’s not bad. Definitely worth playing, as long as you know what you’re getting along the way.
