A vast improvement
Reviewed By: G30FF on 20 Jan 2021I’ve always liked the Genesis X-Men, but I’ve never been that good at it. There are always just a few things that keep it from being great. Now, with this hack, I’ve finished the game for the first time.
This hack goes a long way to making a decent game vastly better. My favourite features are reducing the energy cost for mutant powers, increasing the regen rate for mutant powers, and removing the character switching limits (Seriously, why were they there in the first place?). Being able to switch characters at any time you want opens the game up substantially, and it gives each character a sense of purpose. Switch to Wolverine when you want to do some up close fighting. Nightcrawler to get past barriers. Cyclops for range. And Gambit for… everything else? And increasing the regen speed of mutant powers and reducing the cost makes them much more interesting to use, and makes it more likely that you’d want to use them, rather than save them for special occasions. They regenerate fast enough now that unless you wildly spam them, you shouldn’t run out often. The one downside is that the mutant power pickups are more or less pointless now, but they were so infrequent in the game anyway.
My one critique, and it is very nitpicky, is that the transition from Mojo’s Crunch to the reset cutscene is very jarring. If it could have waited a couple of seconds, for example so that the computer could explode and then the reset cutscene triggers, it might feel a little more natural. But the fact that it removes the need to reset your console at all is a HUGE improvement over the original. It was unique at the time, but not very intuitive.
Overall, very high recommendation from me. The game is still very tough, but this hack makes it much more fun to play.
