Sword Master - Fixed Samples

Hack of Sword Master

Description:

Sword Master is an action platformer game for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It is set in a medieval fantasy setting and features sword fighting and parallax scrolling.

The samples in this game are notorious for their low quality. However, it was recently discovered that this is the result of bit-reversal, an error where the bits in each byte of the samples are in reverse order of how they should be. This hack corrects the bit order for all of the samples, restoring them to how they were intended to be.

You will need an IPS patch installer to patch the rom such as Lunar IPS.

A Clear Improvement.

I am not sure how extensively this fix was implemented. There are many quality sound effects that seem unchanged. However, the sound effect that you will hear the most of in this hack is the player swinging his sword, hence the game’s name.

In the original game the accompanying shout with each hack and thrust sounded like a dog’s muffled cough. With the modified version it sounds like a clear but truncated shout of “Heeyah.” There are also a few noticeable changes in other samples for the player and for mini-bosses throughout the levels. It is a clear improvement.
