Lots of small issues make this hard to recommend

I’m Dutch, and Mother 3 is my favourite game of all time. Though I prefer playing games in English, I absolutely had to check out the quality of this translation, since I’m also a writer.

I’m gonna play through the introduction of the game and check for any grammatical issues and typos.

  • Firstly, the naming screens read really nicely, save for one tidbit: “Wat is je favoriete eten vanuit thuis?” Grammatically correct would be ‘vanuit huis,’ though personally I’d have went with ‘van huis uit.’
  • “Nergens Eilanden” feels a bit too literal, and doesn’t flow too well. It’s hard to think of fitting synonyms, so personally I’d have kept it more like “Nowhere Eilanden.” Names tend to not be translated, generally.
  • The “Nergens Eilanden” becomes a bit more of an issue when the next bit of text we get is “Tazmily Village,” completely in English (village in Dutch is dorp). I don’t really understand why the name of the islands was translated, while the ‘village’ in Tazmily Village was kept in English. Next, Sunshine Forest IS translated (to Zonneschijnwoud, which I think is a really nice one).
  • Claus’ line “Sta op zodat we kunnen gaan spelen!”, I’d change to “Sta op! Ik wil spelen!” This would sound less encyclopedic and more natural, coming from a child.
  • “Geen probleem hier” feels too literal. I’d have used “Niks aan de hand” (possibly “Niks aan de hand hier” if there’s enough space).
  • “Claus and Lucas’s bed.” The apostrophe shouldn’t have another ’s’ put behind it. In English, you can choose. In Dutch, only this form is correct.
  • Why the ‘Mr.’ in “Mr. Slaapkop Lucas”? I understand ‘Meneer’ probably wouldn’t fit, but I believe it’d be better to simply remove ‘Mr.’, keeping “Slaapkop Lucas.”
  • “Ziet er knap uit”, I’d change to “Ziet er goed uit!
  • Love the dialogue of the two pigs
  • Ants don’t ‘lie at your feet.’ They walk.
  • *huff* is still in English. I’d say “puf.”

Okay, I think this is gonna be much longer than I anticipated. But as of now, I see a lot of minor issues that make this hard to recommend to Dutch speaking people. I’d give it a pass if this was the only way for Dutch people to enjoy the game, but most Dutch people have little trouble reading English.
