Patching

Use the online patcher at romhacking.net (or the patcher of your choice) to apply the ips patch to the PRG0 version of The Legend of Zelda. The rom should NOT be PRG1, Rev A, etc. Verify against the hashes below when in doubt or use the Patch Online Now link.

Optional Patches

Optional patches are located under the ./optional folder. They should be applied after the main patch. The following optional patches are available:

  • full_health.ips - Start the game and continue with full health.
  • remove_automap.ips - Apply this before Infinite Hyrule. Or if you prefer the nostalgia of drawing your own map with pencil and paper.
  • reveal_secrets.ips - Provides subtle graphical cues for bombable walls and burnable bushes.
  • reveal_level_9.ips - If you’ve tried everything and still can’t find level 9.
  • start_with_sword.ips - Hate starting with the boomerang? This is your patch.

I wrote a review of this hack that was kind of harsh, but it was for an earlier version (2.1). I saw that the new version was 2.3, and I decided to give it another chance because there’s probably stuff that’s been tweaked.

Upon starting the game, I again noticed how nice the game looks. The sprites and tiles are done really well and it feels like a Zelda game. The animations are fine as well. The color changes make it easier on the eyes and give the world a more natural feel.

But there was still the issue of starting with the boomerang. Like I said before, I don’t feel like smashing the attack button a thousand times to kill stuff. There is no difference to the start of the game other than this simple switch, but I wasn’t surprised there. The boomerang does 1/4 the damage of the sword, so 1-hit enemies take 4 hits and 4 hit enemies take 16 hits. That means if there’s six blue archer dogs on the screen, you have to press the attack button 96 times in order to kill all of them. Nice.

Since I didn’t feel like grinding through this again and dying over and over, I put it down. I enjoy challenge, but playing it made me physically fatigued, and I’d like to kill the enemies and move on to the next screen rather than waste time spamming B.

If you want a challenge, this is the game for you. I wouldn’t recommend it for most people because of the simple reason that it’s just a grind to get items and rupees…the boomerang makes the time to kill enemies much longer.

Version 2.3 Recommended - No
