Insane (but awesome) bosses, fans of Basic Master will be pleasedReviewed By: NARFNra on 01 Jun 2020
When I saw a new Rockman 6 hack came out, I was super excited. It was only after I got to the first boss that I remembered who Tatsu was. Luckily, I’m a fan of Basic Master, and I think U.H.’s boss fights tend towards a little more fair.
Basically, Unique Harassment is a really cool hack. It changes almost everything, new art, new music, porting enemy ai from all across the series, etc. The stages themselves have unique gimmicks and fun musical themes which are all rendered excellently, as well as great art choices. It’s truly a stellar hack.
The shining crowns in this hack are its weapons and its boss fights, though. The weapons are EXTREMELY powerful, each one providing a super useful set of abilities. The bosses are designed to be made easier by using almost any weapon, not just their weakness, so there’s a lot of room for experimentation and taking different paths through the game.
The thing that’s simultaneously coolest and also extremely scary, though, are those aforementioned boss fights. I’ll be real: I advise save stating at the pre-boss checkpoints to train for these guys. Tatsu went ALL OUT on them. Every boss in the game has two life bars, and goes from a first phase that would be kinda tough in a normal Mega Man game to a second phase that’s insanely taxing and forces you to really get in the zone, learning each boss’s strategy. Once you get a weapon bosses and stages become much much easier, but the first one is extremely tough to get to. I recommend Chill Man.
Right now I’m stuck on the final boss, which is beyond ridiculous. I should note that the fortress stages are balanced for you to use your normal abilities, so you don’t have to worry about an extremely hellish gauntlet - you can, if you want, rely on your special weapons and tools to get through them without too much trouble. There’s also cool upgrades that give you things like free lives at checkpoints which are fun to discover.
Ironically, for me the fact that the fortress stages DON’T require intense weapon use is a little bit of a negative. I was really a fan of Basic Master’s unrelenting cruelty, and there’s none of that. On the other hand, every single boss fight in the game, including every single Fortress Boss, is absolutely insane to fight buster only (while being very cheesable with weapons), so if you’re itching to train something against something absolutely terrifying, you can always try that.
Overall, I recommend Unique Harassment. It’s hardest when you have no weapons and that’s most likely the phase that’ll put you off if you’re not a great player. But if you keep at it (and again, I deeply advise save stating before bosses because it’s not worth playing the stages over and over just to get practice on these guys), then the game opens up a lot more once you get weapons. Unlike Basic Master, the Fortress Stages also letting you cheese them opens the game up to those who want to try to beat them savestate less, or to those who just want to get to the end of the game, so I enjoy the flexibility.
But really, the final boss is insane.
