Being bad never felt so good!

Funny how every time we get a “Dark” character, we all grow so fascinated by this person…the complete inverse of the hero we follow so often. Dark Samus is this game’s focus, and she’s prepared to kick some butt on…wherever this is!

THE WORLD: That’s what I’m calling it…The World, because I dunno where this is, lol. But wherever it is, the creator has done a magnificent job in creating it. The original Phazon Hack had a fairly interesting world with plenty of diversity, but this one just dials it up to eleven. The icy caverns of the Omniom Drift, the gigantic mechanical fortress of Tetrafuse, the volcanic Cragsolus, the enomous Sewer complex below Tetrafuse, the imposing and dangerous Phazon Mines, and even the intense trek through the haunted ship Valkyrie XI, every area feels meticulously crafted to be something vastly different from Super Metroid’s Planet Zebes. I LOVE brand new worlds like this, and Phazon Hack .3 does it right!

GAMEPLAY: Very little has changed from SM, but one big difference is the properties of each beam weapon. For example, the Dark Beam (Ice Beam) will freeze enemies in place, but vastly reduces the firing speed of your beam. As a result, each new weapon will require a bit of experimentation in order to adjust to their new properties and how they affect different beam combos. For the most part, it’s not too hard to figure out where to go as it simply takes a bit of careful attention to things and/or killing all enemies in a room if a door is grayed out. One new addition is the Phazon Particles and the Particle Rooms, hidden rooms that reveal how many is in an area and how many you have left to collect. These are new secret items, of which there are about 50 or so, and collecting them all gives you a reward. However, there is ONE bug here that I think was an oversight perhaps, but the reward can prevent you from completing the game as it did me once, as you will no longer be able to break certain barriers blocking key items. As a result, the best thing to do is to finish collecting the Phazon Particles ONLY when you’re ready to finish the game and head to the Valkyrie.

FUN: Well I certainly think so! There’s plenty to do and see here, loads to explore and discover, especially with the Phazon Particles to discover scattered all over the place. There is no story, least not that I’m aware of, but it is kinda fun to imagine this as Dark Samus preparing for her inevitable rematch with Samus in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes.

MY RATING: 9.5/10 I really liked Phazon Hack. It was a nifty little game that had us playing as Dark Samus for who knows what reason…and this is the game expanded to be even bigger of a good time than it was before. It’s not overly difficult, the world is even bigger and more expansive, and the Phazon Particles is a nifty little incentive to explore every nook and cranny for secrets. However, the reward CAN lock you out of game completion due to an oversight, and that can be a very nasty pitfall to someone who has come to the very end, only to be forced to start over from scratch. Other than that one issue, I fully recommend going on an adventure with Dark Samus again!
