Mega Man X SA1

Hack of Mega Man X

SA-1 is a co-processor present in some SNES games. Being roughly four times faster than the main CPU it can significantly improve a game’s performance and that is the purpose of this hack, to remove slowdowns present in the original Mega Man X.

Other changes include:

  • Leg Dash defaulted to the L button.
  • Generated passwords are saved into SRAM
  • Subtanks stop depleting at full health.
  • Disabled double-tap to dash.

Besides zsnes, it should run on all emulators.

Rom disassembled with:

SA1 code based on:

ver. 1.1:

  • Weapon charging animation should reset properly.
  • Restored several graphic/hdma effects that were missing.
  • Fixed B. Cutter weapon.
  • Disabled double-tap to dash.

ROM / ISO Information:

  • Database match: Mega Man X (USA)
  • Database: No-Intro: Super Nintendo Entertainment System (v. 20180813-062835)

Great Hack! but be careful what Emulator you choose (Video inside)

Reviewed By: MagusLOGS on 21 May 2020

I’ve played through the game with this SA-1 Patch on RetroArch using the bnses-mercury Accuracy Core as you can see here (

The slowdowns are gone from what i can tell, most noticeable near the end of the Armored Armadillo Stage and the Ship/GiantFish fight in Launch Octopus Stage. The SNES version is now on par with the PS2/Cube version as far the slowdowns goes.

There seems to be some Sprite issues with Mega Mans hands here and there and the Explosion after beating a Boss is missing (most noticeable after beating Vile in Sigma Stage 1). Those issues could be Emulator/Core related as i don’t have a SD2SNES/Everdrive to test it on real Hardware.

There is also a issue with the Boomerang not being able to grab the Sub-Tank and Items (See 44:56 and 1:08:30 in the Video posted above).

I’ve tried different Emulators/Cores to make sure its not the Patch fault and its working with Snes9x (except for 2002) while bsnes/Mesen-S won’t grab the Items. So be careful when choosing the right Emulator/Core when playing through the game with this Patch, again i don’t have a Flash Cart to test it on real Hardware. You can find more details about compatibility in the Video Description.

Its a great Hack overall, the game itself can feel different and more difficult due to the slowdowns being gone but those who played the PS2/Cube version will feel familar with it.

The SRAM function for the Passwords is a nice addition to the Patch.
