Description:
The purpose of this hack is to mitigate many of the flaws of Phantasy Star II in order to create an overall play experience more similar to that of Phantasy Star IV. This means decreasing the amount of level and money grinding, increasing the number of references to other games in the series, script improvement, bug fixing, and more.
Major changes include: character niches and specialties are enhanced, technique arsenals are improved and mastered more speedily, shop and treasure chest contents are streamlined, characters join with better equipment, useless items are retired in favor of better ones, enemy names are expanded and made more consistent with the other games, etc.
We are currently on Version 4.1, the seventh release of this hack. Version 4.0 was a complete rebuild from the ground up using the Phantasy Star II Disassembly document by lory1990, available on this site. 4.1 only addresses a few small issues from 4.0. Please see the readme for details, and thank you to everyone who tries the hack!

Not a bad way to experience PSII for the first time.
Reviewed By: Psxphile on 20 May 2020Finished playing through this hack recently and enjoyed the reduction of grinding and other QoL features. Changing some of the chest contents so that you’ll actually get worthwhile items was appreciated, too.
Spacing out the characters in battle so that it mirrors PS4 was a fair idea, but I liked how they were oriented more toward the center in the original a little better. Only a little, mind.
Giving newly-recruited characters a full set of equipment is a good idea, I appreciated that too. Whatever helps the player to reduce the need to grind and keep making steady progress is a plus.
I even appreciated updating Nei’s battle sprite so her ears aren’t purple. Why was that even a thing?
Weirdest thing was switching two of the town names, but in the end it doesn’t really change much of anything and makes a certain level of sense.
Hopefully the hack author will see fit to add other oft-requested features like faster walking and a camera scroll fix in any future updates, especially since this hack doesn’t mix well with the smaller tweak patches.
