Breath of Fire Text Cleanup

Hack of Breath of Fire

Description:

The first Breath of Fire is the last in the series still using outdated lore terms, such as Bleu and Tyr as opposed to Deis and Myria. In addition, the script is rather bare-bones, full of unnecessary abbreviations, and at times makes it difficult to discern speaking characters during cutscenes.

Breath of Fire Text Cleanup aims to smooth out some of these flaws, improving the dialogue on a wide scale while updating character names and many terms to reflect later games, as well as Ryusui’s Breath of Fire II fan translation. In addition, countless item names have been cleverly renamed to avoid confusing abbreviations and reflect their true use.

Please check the readme for a note on playable character names.

The Soldier Name Reverter mod is already included in this patch. They do not need to be applied in tandem.

Consider combining this mod with the following others.

ROM / ISO Information:

  • Breath of Fire (U) (Mode7).gba
  • Mode7 Release (4,194,304 bytes)
  • CRC-32: 4BBBE9A2
  • MD-5: 8C0D04E7909814C1BDBA874A5A84EB4D
  • SHA-1: 04C15F2B2E7C504F40B97E3A30F2CD591BC7AEF8
  • (While the readme states that the patch is intended for the Mode7 scene release of the ROM, it will work with no issues on the No-Intro verified USA ROM [CRC-32: F06422A8], and will actually clean the Mode7 ROM by removing the unskippable intro hack.)

Nice additions, but changes too many things

Reviewed By: Bregalad on 10 Apr 2020

The item names of Breath of Fires have long confused me, due to a ridiculously short length limit of the SNES original, and this hack does a great job as improve some of them.

Changing names that are recurrent in the series such as Tyr being Myria is a good idea. But all online resources such as forums or walk through will still talk about Tyr.

Changing character’s default names, especially when it had to make up their own names because the Japanese original wouldn’t fit in 4-letter names, is going a bit too far. All online resources will use the names from the previous translation anyway.

Unfortunately there’s also things this hack changes a bit too much. The font is changed for no reason, no big deal, but if it isn’t broken why fix it? Now the letters are thin and the space between letters is just getting bigger, what do we gain from this?

I just looked at Breath of Fire II, III, IV and V, and all of them use “Equip”. Why does this hack, who claim to improve the consistency with the series, suddenly use “Gear”, when the unaltered GBA game uses “Equip”? This hack is full of weird changes like that.

Depending on your tastes, you might either enjoy this hack or not.
