Interesting Idea, Some Flaws

Reviewed By: Shauing on 12 Mar 2020

Girl Dream-Topia has a pretty interesting take on SMB1 game-play wise by making your running ability pretty much disabled (it is there, but reduced to next-to-nothing), and the levels are designed around this.

This is a more patient-pace hack, where you have to take your time, watch what’s on the screen and move/jump accordingly. It is tight but not pixel perfect/only-one-way either. The game is pretty forgiving as well by giving you lots of lives and easy-to-find lives as well, plus a more real-time timer.

I like the idea of a different character and a different looking-world though I have my issues with how it is represented here. Most of the levels are monochromatic heavy, either pink or gray, the worse of these is in the water levels, where I had to change of palette emulation in order to differentiate the background and foreground, which otherwise looked like it had the same colors. Yes, the palette is limited, but the original SMB1 is pretty colorful and diverse despite this. Also, if this is a new world, why just change Mario, Toad and the Princess; why not the enemies and the world itself?

The music, sounds somewhat empty, with a lack of harmonic phrases/accompaniment, plus they’re too short; they’re not bad but feel uninspiring and perhaps might bore after a while. There’s still SMB jingles which I don’t understand why they weren’t replaced.

The game is mostly stable bug-wise, though Koopa’s tend to have their original palette restored instead of the monochromatic one, and it is possible at times to clip through blocks.

Overall, it is an interesting gameplay idea but the rest needs fine-tuning. I can recommend play it, but you have to play it by its pace/rules. Otherwise, you’ll drop it by the second level.
