Unlocks the "Ultima" potential of Final Fantasy IV
Reviewed By: Ace_Aileron on 30 Jun 2022For many, Final Fantasy II (SNES) was the first true RPG that built a complete world, characters and subsequent story arcs/growth,and a story filled with twists and resolution. While many were previously exposed to games like the Dragon Warrior (Quest) series or the original Final Fantasy, none of them came close to being the masterpiece that is FF II.
While the original was amazing in its own right, issues with the translation, a more moderate difficulty, and other problems caused this game to quickly be overshadowed by other RPGs of the era.
While there have been many attempts to address the aforementioned issues (Japanese translation (i.e. FFIV Hard Type), the Game Boy Advanced Version, and DS 3-D remake), none of them quite captured the original magic…
…until now.
Final Fantasy IV Ultima is a masterpiece that any fan of the original game should be playing in lieu of any other version. Not only does it capture everything that made the original game iconic, it adds so many perfectly created features to make an epic game even more so.
Between the small (albeit ingenious) changes to the characters, a redesigned world map,a much stronger script, new weapons and items, and optional bosses that add a new challenge to the game that even a veteran will appreciate, this may be the strongest version of the game to currently exist.
It had been a while since I had picked up and played Final Fantasy II but since discovering this patch, I’ve burned through the game multiple times and have not grown tired in doing so.
If you’re a fan of the original game or even just looking for an old-school 16-bit masterpiece to fire up, do yourself a favor and play this version today.
