Corrected release date. Just checked Wikipedia, although it's not always a reliable source. The game wasn't released to the arcades until October 1986, and both the FDS and NES release dates were in 1988!

Fixed description details for better reading.

SUPER MARIO BROS Special X1 for NES

Hack of Super Mario Bros.

Description:

SUPER MARIO BROS Special X1 for NES is a altered version of the Super Mario Bros. Special for NES hack which was created by Frantik and Karatorian. It is altered to more closely resemble the X1 version of Super Mario Bros. Special. The changes found in the hack include:

  • Title screen more closely resembles the X1 game.
  • World selection by pressing B.
  • Altered graphics such as dithering and a altered pallette.
  • The pipe entering cutscene at the beginning of some levels such as World 1-2 and 2-2 is done manually.
  • Ending message. A farewell message to Hudson Soft which closed down in 2012.

Note that this is based on the 1.0~rc1 hack of Super Mario Bros. Special for NES and will not contain any features of future versions should future versions be released.

The readme is in S-JIS format.

An almost perfect product-improved "port" of the PC-88 game

Reviewed By: Burningtrash4heat on 09 Feb 2020

This is a nearly perfect conversion of the PC-88 version of Super Mario Bros Special. The levels, color palettes and most of the mechanics are very faithful to the original. Differences include: ·Horizontal screen scrolling, which wasn’t present in the PC-88 version. ·The music and gameplay are not laggy. ·A few powerful and enemies are missing from the PC-88 version. If this hack ever gets an update, it would be cool to see crabs, p-wings and hammers return.

(Edit: Found a major glitch in 4-3, the “Coin Heaven” room exit pipe is broken. No way out.)
