Mouryou Senki Madara

Nintendo Entertainment System

Game Description:

Mouryou Senki Madara is a role playing game for the Nintendo Entertainment System.

Translation Description:

Madara is an… interesting little oldschool RPG. The plot follows Madara, who was found floating in a river with a fair number of his body parts chopped off. Mechanical replacements are forged, and on his 15th birthday he is sent off to recover his real body and real strength to depose the evil Emperor Miroku and save the Fuduraku continent from the ever-advancing forces of the Moki armies. It’s a fairly simple plot, but it’s not without its twists. It’s also a fairly difficult game, especially towards the end. Don’t expect an easy ride on this one!

Sporting an incredible soundtrack (especially for an NES game) Madara’s battle system finds its characters acting, for the most part, autonomously. You can intervene and give orders at any time, though. It’s fairly intuitive once you get used to it. The patch is out, so go play!

One of the first grade A translation hacks I've ever played!

I remember having played this game in English waaaay back, and it was quite an interesting experience. The translation translates everything to my knowledge. It flows well, and I haven’t really noticed any major issues. Perhaps it could use another revision, since with the modern tech AGTP could likely cram more text in there without much trouble, if needed that is (it looks like this may be redundant).

As to the game itself - it’s a JRPG with a semi-automatic battle system, in which your characters keep inching towards the enemies throughout the battle scenarios. It’s quite unique for the time, but it can make the game really difficult at times. Either way, I still enjoyed my time with it. It’s worth noting that the game is based on a manga/OVA to a large extent, and some plot points are found in a more fleshed-out form there. Apparently, there are more games based on this franchise, with the ones for the SFC and PC-98 being the most prominent. Overall, both the patch and the game are definitely worth trying, just to see what Konami’s vision regarding JRPGs was back then.
