A very pretty game with a twistReviewed By: goldenband on 31 Dec 2019
Donald Duck no Mahou no Boushi, aka Donald Duck and the Magical Hat, is a very pretty game that pulls a nice trick early on: it starts out looking like a sad minigame collection for kids, but soon takes an unexpected left turn and becomes an appealing platformer.
It’s still very much on the easy side – more of a light confection than a full-fledged gaming experience – and the controls are occasionally iffy, but the whole thing is so clearly slathered in TLC that it’s hard not to like it.
A game like Donald Duck no Mahou no Boushi deserves a careful and well-integrated translation, and gorgyrip and colleagues have done a nice job here. The gold standard is always “Is this as good as, or better than, an official localization would have been?” This patch passes that test with flying colors: nothing looks awkward or hacked-in.
The script is appropriately sweet-natured without being cloying, and though I can’t evaluate its fidelity, it “feels” right for the license. There are a small handful of spelling errors (”gondolla”, “hidding”), typos (”everylast one”), and grammatical errors (”go the Dark King’s castle”), but they’re rare enough that they don’t detract from the overall experience.
By the way, to put two myths about the game to bed: no, Donald’s not swearing in English when you get a GAME OVER. And no, contrary to what some websites claim, there’s no “additional content” to unlock with the Barcode Battler II – just level skip codes, which you won’t need for a game this easy anyway.
If you’re looking for a laid-back Disney game to digest over an afternoon, Donald Duck no Mahou no Boushi is a perfect choice. Thanks to the efforts of gorgyrip and crew, you can enjoy this one in English with a smooth, natural localization.
