A Review of Sailor Moon FighterS by Metaquarius

Reviewed By: Alison the Pink on 07 Dec 2019

Short version, Sailor Moon FighterS is as drastic an update to Super S as Super Turbo was to World Warrior, and you should absolutely play it.

Long version, Sailor Moon Super S is the notoriously disappointing sequel to the enduring cult classic queen of SNES fighters, Sailor Moon S by the acclaimed Arc Systems Work.

Rushed together in an obviously half-assed way by a new team with very little time or experience, Super S featured a uniquely ear grating sound engine, watered down and homogenized versions of the nine returning characters, the occasional glitched sprite, and horribly unbalanced gameplay in the form of the one newcomer to the roster, Sailor Saturn, who featured a very strong moveset, and a glitch unique to her that made her Light and High kicks unblockable. For all of these reasons, and more that I am sure have slipped my mind, the community that has kept Sailor Moon S alive and relevant views Super S as a source of disappointment at best and frustration at worst.

Even as the game has its defenders, most notably being Big Zam, a talented Chibi main in the upper echelon of Sailor Moon S players, Super S, due to its underwhelming, aggravating and baffling gameplay, has never had its chance to shine in the FGC.

Enter Metaquarius, a french gamer who, seemingly of his own accord and with little or no prior knowledge of SMS’s community, began work on FighterS, an improvement patch that would add a 3v3 mode. Fast forward to today, and this project has grown way past just an extra mode. Sailor Moon FighterS It has become its own unique title, distinct in its own way and vastly superior to Super S in almost every possible way.

Listing everything changed would take entirely too long, but even just a general look at the progression of this hack is nothing less than shocking.

Changed sound effects, cleaned up sprites, new stages a combo counter, a rudimentary training dummy system, new colors for every character, and a fully complete English translation of all menus and story modes, including the Outer Senshi featuring their own playable stories! And the inclusion of a 3v3 versus mode after the style of King of Fighters!

But most importantly and impressively: A complete overhaul of the balance of the game. Along with buffing the old cast to their former glory, toning down and fixing the obviously broken aspects of Saturn, Meta has taken this opportunity to leave his mark on these characters by giving the entire roster an identity and feel unique to FighterS. Many of the normals and specials of every character in the roster were changed, with some characters sporting brand new moves!

Some stand outs include Sailor Mars retaining all three of her projectiles from both S and Super S, Venus gaining a slide, Mercury having a very satisfying multi kick command normal, and Jupiter having an extremely flashy new desperation move: A divekick with a completely new sprite! And last but not least: Super Moon! With a completely revamped special moveset in the form of Cosmic Punch and Pulsar Dance, and another new DM: Celestial Heart Power!

Which brings me to my favorite part of this entire hack: NEW CHARACTERS!! 3 in total grace the roster: Raphael, hailing from TMNT Tournament Fighters (whose prominence in the FGC rivals SMS), Marin, from the Super Famicom exclusive Seifuku Densetsu: Pretty Fighter, and Old Moon! The original version of Usagi returns from SMS with her own unique playstyle! And all three of these characters come with their very own story modes!

These characters, new and old are the foundation of this hack, make this game as worth playing as the acclaimed Sailor Moon S, and has become one of my all time favorite fighting games ever. I cannot recommend it enough.
