This revision adds a unique "PTS" graphic (10 PTS, 50 PTS) that appears near-identical to the one seen in the arcade game. This graphic was not present in the earlier version. Also reworked the first half of the entry description to read more upfront about what this hack is and what its goal is.

The Legend of Zelda - Modern Classic Edition

Hack of The Legend of Zelda

Description:

This hack updates the entire The Legend of Zelda game to match the look of more (relatively) modern Zelda games, particularly the Oracle series. With the exception of a few background tiles in dungeons, every tile has been updated including enemies, items and bosses. However, nothing has been moved or had its behavior changed, and all of the graphic changes are simply updates (as opposed to replacements).

A few text changes have been made to the title to make the items match most Zelda continuity (for example: Red Ring is now Red Tunic, Magical Sword is now Master Sword, etc.) No in-game text has been changed.

Many the dungeons have been re-colored so that each has its own color scheme (rather than have 2 gold dungeons, 2 grey ones, etc.). For example: Level 8 (The Forest Dungeon) is now green while Level 5 (The Mountain Dungeon) is brown. Level 2 (The Moon Dungeon) is purple(?).

The Automap Plus from snarfblam has been thrown in. This is the only functional change (improvement) to the game.

ROM / ISO Information:

  • Requires Legend of Zelda, The (U) (PRG 0)

A Mixed Bag

Reviewed By: PowerPanda on 20 Oct 2019

I am reviewing 3 hacks that update the Zelda 1 Graphics: Cute Zelda Modern Classic Edition (this one) DX Relocalized Version

This hack ranks #2 of 3. Parts of this hack are great. The new enemy sprites, taken from later Zelda games, look awesome. The updates to rupees, hearts, and items is also a great idea. There are some very questionable choices though. The use of dithering for shading the rock walls clashes with the rest of the art, and the borders for the A/B item slots are atrocious. The backgrounds in the dungeons are also very loud compared to the original. So you get some good, some bad.
