Mitsume ga Tooru

Nintendo Entertainment System

Game Description:

Mitsume ga Tooru is an action platformer game for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Based on an anime/manga with the same title.

Translation Description:

Nothing much to say here. It’s a small, quick, complete translation. Download the patch and discover this game’s majesty. If that’s even the right word. I think it is though.

Oldie but goodie

Reviewed By: goldenband on 19 Jun 2019

Just played through The Spoony Bard’s translation of Mitsume ga Tooru on my flash cart. Even though this patch is over 20 years old, I had no problems, no crashes, no issues of any kind. About the only thing I saw was a single stray character that didn’t get cleared during the text crawl at the end of Stage 4, but for all I know that may have been a pre-existing issue in the original Famicom release.

As for the game itself, it’s been hyped too much and is somewhat overrated, but is still worth playing. If you could duck or slide, Mitsume ga Tooru would have much better “flow”. As it stands there are a lot of places where things come to a screeching halt for too long – enemies you can’t easily kill and have to wait out, or long delays while something or other happens (at one point I had to stand around for about 30 seconds before a moving platform was accessible). I also think the spear is underutilized and takes too long to materialize, and losing all your weapon upgrades every time you die is a real buzzkill: you should just lose the one that’s active.

Anyway, Mitsume ga Tooru is a nice-looking game with good music and presentation. Even though I didn’t love it – I’m not sure that I even liked it very much – I’m grateful that this translation allowed me to experience it in English. And hey, you’ll probably enjoy the game more than I did; it’s short and, despite a few aggravating bottlenecks, it’s easy to finish on your first attempt thanks to infinite continues.
