Description:
Super Mario Land DX is a romhack of the original Super Mario Land for the Game Boy that turns the game into a Game Boy Color game. It adds color and changes the graphics to give the game a modern look.
v2.0 (20/04/2022):
- Framerate issues have been addressed. That includes issues in the original game, especially noticeable in 3-2 (hard mode).
- Mario’s sprites have been revamped. They are mostly the same size as the originals.
- Mario’s relative position when jumping has been fixed. This was responsible for the weird collision issues in v1.0 (yeah, it wasn’t the sprites).
- Luigi has been added. He has slightly different physics.
- Old graphics are now an option. Not all graphics are unchanged, as it mostly affects the sprites, but this should be good enough for people who didn’t like the new ones.
- A shortcut to difficult mode has been added.
- New palette for Superball Mario/Luigi.
- New animation for Super Mario/Luigi when looking up.
- New animation for Super Mario/Luigi when entering a pipe.
- Options menu added to accommodate the new options.
- Battery added to permanently save your options, top score and level selection.
- Every single stage’s colors have been tweaked.
- An incompatibility screen for the original Game Boy has been added.
- Hundreds of minor (and not so minor) changes and fixes.

A classic is reborn in stunning COLOR!
Reviewed By: phantom_with_a_rose on 23 Apr 2019I remember getting the original “Super Mario Land” for Game Boy and playing it for the first time on Christmas Day of ‘97. Despite how short the playthrough is, it still remains as one of my favorite Mario games of all time! Since the release of the Game Boy Color (which I received for Christmas the following year), I only DREAMED of seeing SML and SML2 re-done in color and hoped Nintendo would make both projects come to fruition (alas, they never did). Fortunately, toruzz finally made my dreams a reality not only by not only making a fully colorized version of SML2, but also now its predecessor!
I have tried a few color hacks of SML and thought that they were pretty decent (albeit flawed) efforts, but this is, by FAR, the BEST colorized rendition of the classic GB title! I also love the updated sprite designs for Mario, Princess Daisy (who now wears her iconic yellow dress and crown), and the enemies and bosses! Like toruzz’s color hack of SML2, this truly feels like an official GBC remake/re-release of SML by Nintendo. Toruzz has done an OUTSTANDING job at making almost everything look as detailed and precise as possible! My only minor complaint is the lack of color in the fireballs that Mario shoots at enemies (which is still black). It would have been nice to see those have a reddish color to them similar to the color of the fireballs seen in most other Mario games. Aside from that, I had an absolute BLAST replaying through SML with this patch! It is truly THE definitive version to play. HIGHLY recommended!!
