One of the greatest games for the NES got a huge upgrade here. I can only imagine how awesome it would have been to be able to play this version when I was a kid instead of having to write down a thousand letter “mantra” that came with all the 1’s and l’s and 0’s and O’s you could ever ask for to ensure that 75% of the time you wrote it down it would not work when you tried to put it in!
Really love the additional touches here like the un-censoring of the religious stuff and the alternate font that makes “Hello” read “Hello” instead of “Nello”.
I’m not sure what all went into the mentioned “bug fixing” that this hack also had, but I can say for certain that it does include the “Pendant” fix. For anybody who is unaware of what this means, it was a coding bug in the official release that gave you an immediate 25% boost to your physical attack from the very beginning of the game. Once you picked up the optional Pendant mid-game, you would actually revert to the normal attack power and lose 25% of your damage output and gimp the rest of your playthrough!
Huge thanks to the author for one hell of a hack to one of my all time favorite games from childhood. It was a pleasure playing it.
Highly recommended to anybody who loves old school platformers with some RPG elements thrown in. This is one of the “darker” games on the NES, and the soundtrack is amazing. It’s also probably the first and last time I ever saw characters smoking cigarettes on a release for a Nintendo console. :)
Ahhhhh… the 80’s. Had to censor out Christ on a cross in a church, but NPCs chain smoking was A-Okay.
