7th Saga: The New Class

Hack of The 7th Saga

Description:

Among its many flaws, one weakness of The 7th Saga was that the characters were almost carbon copies of each other, limiting replay value. In this hack, based on the improvements already made in 7th Saga Redux hack, the characters have been given familiar classes based on Final Fantasy 1, with different stats and spells. Because this version can be played with minimal grinding, it’s a lot easier to try out each class and learn its unique playing style. The classes:

  • RedMage (Kamil): Well-rounded in all areas
  • Fighter (Olvan): Tough physical warrior with healing magic
  • Bl.Mage (Esuna): Powerful offensive mage
  • Bl.Belt (Wilme): Expert in unarmed combat
  • Robot (Lux): The ultimate defensive tank
  • Wh.Mage (Valsu): Healing and support mage
  • Thief (Lejes): Master of stealth and sabotage

Much Better!

Reviewed By: firedropdl on 22 Oct 2018

This is one of those SNES and NES games that I revisit every 5 or so years, and I decided to give this hack a try this time.

I’ve always loved this game, but the difficulty curve really made the 2nd half of the game drag on because of all of the slow grinding. I should put a disclaimer though and say that I’ve never played as Esuna before though, and she seems to be seriously OP when it comes to grinding and pretty much doing anything. Not sure how much that was the case in the original game compared to how she was tweaked now. I spent a few hours at one point grinding Flames with Vacuum2 to get her overleveled to 50 or so before getting Olvan on the team. That’s something I’d never done before since it would take far too long to level a character that high.

Nati has made a great update to this game here. My only suggestion if they were ever to revisit this for a tweak would be to move the seed shop into the Airship so you have that available to you until the end of the game for OCD gamers like me. I found it unfortunate that once you progressed the story far enough that you no longer had access to it anymore to buff your way to godlike status.

Really a small complaint that most people won’t care about though. I was so overpowered by the end of this that I could pretty much escape every battle on the first or 2nd try to the boss and he didn’t stand a chance.

I might have to try out Lux when I play this one 5 years from now, since he’s the only character I have left to play through to the end of the game. I’ll have to make a mental note to try to play this version of the game without level grinding and see how that goes.

Thanks for the great hack for a game that doesn’t seem to get that much love!

Highly recommended for anyone who was a fan of the original game.
