This is a neat, colorful hack, but it takes a little bit to get going. The first stage is a lot harder than much of what follows, and I wasn’t a big fan of the green and purple aesthetic that it had going for it, but after that, this hack takes off like a rocket. You’ll see all sorts of strange creatures; some are borrowed from other games (Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land and Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening the biggest among them), but some are entirely new creatures. It creates a slightly disjointed aesthetic, but it does work pretty well overall. The actual stages become quite breathtaking as you journey onward, too, and there are lots of neat little secrets hidden here and there. My favorite place is World 4, which I call the Magenta Wastelands. Everything is purple and a sort of red-violet with splashes of sky blue and pale green here and there, including your fireballs; it’s a color combination that works so incredibly well that I was actually hoping that I didn’t have to move on to World 5. The levels are new in some cases, and remixed in others, but there’s usually something clever added to them. The level design is mostly fair; you shouldn’t have to use states, but in some areas (especially that one jump in the final castle), you might be glad that you did.
