Super Ghouls'n Ghosts Restoration

Hack of Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts

Description:

This hack restores the crosses that appeared in the background of stage 1 and on the zombie’s coffin from the Japanese version, and it also changes the names of Asutaroto to Astaroth and Sardius back to being called Samael once again as well.

It also removes most of the slowdowns, making the game much more enjoyable to play as well.

It also makes it where you can access the hidden menu with the first controller by holding L and pressing Start as well.

This hack also works with Lufia’s Super Arthur hack as well.

The 0xED hex editor was used to change the name of the final boss.

Makes SGnG run really well!

Reviewed By: Fras on 18 Oct 2017

This patch uncensors the american release of the game, and adds in some unused sprites as well. My interest in this patch lied elsewhere however; it attempts to lessen this game’s infamous slowdown and does so rather well! Some places that used to slow down to a crawl now goes so fast it almost feels as if it’s speeding up instead!

I recorded a quick playthrough of loop 1 with Higan - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGOxwcTtXbE. I’ve added some notable timestamps in the description box.

It does seem to have a few flaws though. The intro cutscene has broken sprites, and stage 1 didn’t seem to load the first time in my recording so I had to reset. I consider these to be rather minor issues however.

If you’re a fan of this game you should definitely try this patch out. Seeing how well the game could have ran back in the day is a pretty cool experience!
