Level Zero

Hack of Chrono Trigger

Description:

Level Zero is a concept hack that was initially designed to circumvent the quirky nature of magic defense and other stats by removing the level-up entirely. After changing character and enemy stats, I mainly tried to learn to do more things with the ROM and improve the game’s balance by tweaking more and more components of the game, even adjusting/adding a few minor events.

While this is not explicitly a hardtype hack, it is probably is a bit on the difficult side, so if you’d like to play Chrono Trigger with a bit of an edge, Level Zero is worth a go.

This patch earlier was known as “Frozen in Time” but has changed substantially since then.

Prepare to Kiss Dirt

Reviewed By: obscurumlux01 on 09 Sep 2015

I would’ve said ‘Prepare to Die’ but that was already taken. Prepare to be Wiped Out, Prepare to be Beaten to a Pulp, Prepare to Lose Repeatedly.

But I like the concepts of defeat meaning you kiss the dirt ;)

So onto the review!

The removal of levels is a godsend to those looking for a new spin on the game.

Not directly compatible with the Retranslation hacks (for some odd reason) without having to manually go into Temporal Flux and fix various broken things (dialogue boxes, items from chests, etc).

This alteration to the game is NOT recommended for beginners! You will ‘kiss dirt’ at the first boss; almost guaranteed.

You will likely have to look in an old Nintendo Power Magazine (or look on GameFAQs) for some boss strategies.

You will have to pay attention, carry and use consumables, conserve your resources, and otherwise pay attention so you don’t ‘kiss dirt’ too often.

So what does all this mean? It means that when you remove leveling from an RPG as awesome as this, you make it far more focused on player skill and boss strategy. This is a fantastic concept that I hope spreads to other games!

Absolutely a must to play through for any fan of Chrono Trigger! Only minor quibble I could make is the lack of a version that works with the Chrono Compendium Retranslation. If they did that then I would consider my life complete.
