Mega Man X MSU-1 Audio

Hack of Mega Man X

Description:

This patch is intended to replace all the music from the 1993 SNES game, Mega Man X, with full CD-quality streaming audio using the MSU-1 audio specification created by byuu.

This patch requires the MSU-1 audio ‘chip’ to function, and as such will only function properly with the higan and BSNES emulators, as well as the SD2SNES flash cart.

However, the .spc fallback routine means that if the MSU-1 chip is NOT detected (such as in an emulator that does not support it, like ZSNES or snes9x), the standard audio will play, leaving the game to play as if un-patched. Non-destructive patching, FTW.

A link to a pre-assembled Audio Pack can be found in the Readme.

User Review Information

The music is not faithful to the original

Reviewed By: Bregalad on 04 Aug 2015

This hack adds CD-quality audio to Mega Man X, something I was especially excited to try. Unfortunately, the music from the sample pack is for the most part heavy metal remixes which do not sound anything like the original songs, let alone better.

Only a couple of songs, such as the Title Screen or the Boss Theme sounds good and faithful to the original.

So in conclusion I do not recommend this hack, as the music is not of “improved quality” - it’s just a completely different remixed music that plays instead - which does not fit into the mood of the game.
