Final Fantasy 6 - A Complete Hack

Hack of Final Fantasy III

This is a complete hack of Final Fantasy 6. The changes are numerous, the sprites have been fully changed, so has the text, bosses, various enemies, equipment… Some things that people will notice pretty quickly, others that won’t be as easy to pick up.

The author wanted to make a hack that was fair to the player, but that felt different enough from the original game. This is a bit harder then the original game, but not absurdly so, so it should be playable if you aren’t looking for a hardtype sort of game.

Feel free to try if you are interested! There’s more information available in the readme, but playing it for yourself is the best way to notice the changes.

The newest update fixes several typos, and also changes quite a few late game enemies/bosses. They should be more interesting, now.

It also adds a couple new pieces of equipment, and has a few other minor balance changes.

Update adds a second patch to the game - An additional hard mode. Pick the one you prefer.

2019 Update makes a couple minor changes to the game, but the biggest change is the new face pics. I’ve also kept the old versions of the patch in the download file for nostalgia’s sake - but I would suggest using the newest version.

Updated in May 2019. There was a pretty severe graphical bug. Apologies to anyone who played it during this time.

A fun and challenging hack.

Final Fantasy 3(6) is one of many people’s most cherished games, so when someone changes nearly every aspect of a game, people may feel intrigued to see if it succeeds or not. I can say from my experience that this hack is very good, but not without it’s flaws.

Nearly every bit of dialogue you may expect to see is replaced with comical and random pop culture references. For the most part, the writing is very funny. The only thing you may find bad about this is if you felt attached to any of the characters from the original, what comes out of their mouths is sometimes very odd and nothing like you would expect.

As far as changes to the characters go, they are all altered from Terra to General Leo. Terra is now a White Mage and male. Locke is now a Dragoon and female. And even the Emperor is now an eleven year old girl!. The change was quite enjoyable for the most part.

One of the biggest changes is how you learn spells. Coming from the original, most characters are able to learn nearly every spell. That is not the case in this hack. Spell learning is very limited even in the later parts of the game. This is due to what equipment the “classes” can use. Don’t expect to have a full party of guys who know life 3, ultima and quick.

Equipment has been changed in nearly every way. Certain pieces of equipment from swords to relics can teach you spells, and offer different bonuses than the original games gear. One of the biggest problems I had was figuring out which equipment taught spells or not. Weapons have no indication of what they teach if any. Also, instead of learning 3-5 spells at once like in the original, you only learn 1 spell from one piece of gear at a fixed rate.

All the “overpowered” items you find in the original have been removed or changed to something less useful (Ragnarok sword, Paladin Shield, Illumina nowhere to be seen). You may feel disappointed that you break the curse on the rusty shield to find a decent, but not super powered shield.

The graphical changes are mostly to the character portraits and sprites. I had no real problems with the graphical changes except the Pirate’s portrait was not very good in my opinion. It looks like a lot of time was spent drawing the changes.

Lastly, the alterations to the monsters AI is sort of a mixed bag. It felt slightly harder working your way through the game. That is not a bad thing. What is a bad thing was the drastic changes to certain bosses and monsters late game. I wouldn’t say the AI is harder, only much more able to decimate your party no matter how much you prepare. Some bosses spam 5-6 spells before you can act once. you need to have luck on your side for some fights. The hidden bosses are a nice addition, however you may wish they are slightly less powerful in design.

Overall, Final Fantasy 6 - A Complete Hack was a fun ride and took me about 30 hours (game time) to complete. I did every side quest and stole from every boss. Only a couple times did I find it frustrating to play. If you want a good laugh and also want to try a new take on a classic game, this is for you. To the purists you may want to steer clear as it might warp your perception of one of the best role playing game’s ever made.
