Description:

From Drewseph’s site:

Metroid: Redesign is a total overhaul of Super Metroid by Drewseph with major coding done by Kejardon, MathOnNapkins and Jathys. The Planet Zebes, now bigger than we’ve previously seen it, is filled with many mysteries. Sleeping within the depths of the planet is a secret heavily protected by the last standing symbols of the great Chozo race…

New Features:

  • Physics Changes
  • New Items
  • Abilities

The archive on this site contains both patches released by Drewseph, be sure to read the included Readme before attempting to apply a patch. This hack does not work with ZSNES 1.4x, all future versions of ZSNES will work.

Worthy as sequel to me

Reviewed By: blargg on 15 May 2010

I’ve been a big Metroid fan since I got my NES over two decades ago, and played Super Metroid nearly fifteen times over the years. I haven’t really gotten into ROM hacks, but figured I’d give one of the Super Metroid hacks a try. I’ve been blown away by the quality of this. I was also concerned that this might only work on emulators, as it involves some programming changes, but this ran virtually flawlessly on my SNES.

This remake completely redoes the world, packing the maps with almost twice as many corridors. Gravity has been altered, a welcome change that I adjusted to fairly quickly. There are several small programming changes, adding some new items and things you can do. There are new puzzles and little rehash of those from the original. Rooms are well-designed, and have a consistent feel to them. Some of the more ambient music tracks were put to good use.

Unfortunately there are a few areas where I had to use save states due to difficulty. And then there’s Tourian, where Metroids respawn every few seconds, and it’s much harder to get them off than in the original. Now that I’ve spent about 20 hours beating it, I can say that the problems were overall minor, and I want to play through it again already.
