Super Mario Bros. 3Mix

Hack of Super Mario Bros. 3

Description:

Super Mario Bros. 3Mix is a large-scale hack that changes and adds lots of features to Super Mario Bros. 3, and pays homage to many past and (relative) FUTURE Mario titles, while attempting to remain faithful in spirit to the look and feel of Super Mario Bros. 3.

  • All new levels (and a few “remixed” Mario 3 levels somewhere in there)
  • Many new songs added from other Mario games (kept some SMB3 classics!)
  • Play as Mario, Luigi, or Toad (cosmetic only) in any configuration
  • New power-ups (Penguin replaces Frog, Carrot replaces Tanooki)
  • Star Coins (which are used to unlock portions of the game!)
  • Ability to re-enter past worlds (with level completion intact!)
  • Ability to re-enter past levels (to get all of your Star Coins)
  • Alternate exits in some levels
  • Ability to save progress
  • Many new enemies, typically some special ones for the world theme
  • All new bosses (many are “remixes” of bosses from other Mario games)
  • All kinds of gameplay changes to meet the theme of a level/world!

ROM / ISO Information:

The prefix for a remix!

We have seen revolutionary rom hacks that have paved the way for an entire community to grow.

Most notable are SMWCentral and Sonic Retro who dedicate their resources to be the most comprehensive site for your hacking needs. All these tools for just one game?!

However its not about these site but the impact of hacks and disassemblies that create the catalysts for such sites to happen. It is my firm belief that Southbird’s Mario 3Mix as well as his Disassembly started way back in 2011 may have created a niche for future smb3 hacking.

Upon starting the game you get a save feature and a character select with an option for player 2 to buy in. This allows for quick set up and reentry if you mess up, want a different character or if the wife came home and she wants to play too!

The new game map allows you to reenter levels which will come in handy for power ups and star coins. (More on that in a sec.)

The levels all share a central theme for each world for example, world 1 and 2 represent Super Mario Bros. 1 and 2 respectively (Note: Spoiler alert: Level 3 is not an smb3 world.) In these levels you can revisit old levels from previous games with a twist, some levels are mashed together, some you can interact with certain elements you could not before. (New secret pipes, waterfalls)

To change up gameplay even further you are tasked with hunting down star coins reappearing from New Super Mario Bros. there are three to each level and are placed in difficult to reach spots. Luckily its not a requirement unless you are looking to see what these do but knowing you can come back and hunt these down later does make me feel better.

After finding secret exits, going through ghost houses (complete with its haunting SMW theme) you head to one of the very first boss castles in the game. The game really shines with boss battles. There are a variety of cool mario bosses featured after the standard bowser fights. The get harder and more complex with each fallen foe but in a way to make you learn from mistakes rather than relying on luck or save states to get the job done. (Sorry, No Boss spoilers here.)

Next up is power ups, classic Mario mainstays such as the mushroom, flower, star and leaf reappear which is always welcome and they do come in abundance. The hammer bros. suit from Super Mario Bros. 3 returns which again is very welcomed. New to the game are the penguin suit which combines the powers of the frog suit and ice flower as well as the bunny carrot which last appeared in Super Mario Land 2 back in 1992. Finally we have yoshi; Do not adjust your monitor, you saw the screenshot above and this yoshi operates just as he did back in Super Mario World. This alone makes me wonder how far this hack has pushed the limits of the nes. All but yoshi can be stored in your inventory after visiting a mushroom house.

With the mushroom house, the stupid line em’ up game has been replaced with the memory card game but with a twist. It works almost like New Super Mario Brothers where you can keep hitting cards until you get two bowser cards (4 are in play at all times). You leave with whatever you win.

The point of the game here is to push how far the nes can go with all the neat effects and various gimmicks (They can’t all look and play like World 1-1!) as well as balance the game out so it may be enjoyed by gamers young and old. To create such a game like that for all gamers in mind is a labor of love. You are given all these lives and weaponry at your disposal, do you just try to finish the stages? Will you go for the illusive star coins instead?

There is much more I could cover praising Southbird’s recent rom hack (coughantigravitylevelscough). However I would rather you play it and see for yourself and hopefully you will say the same thing. This game changes the foundation of rom hacks going forward.

Finally, I acknowledge Mario Adventure as being revolutionary for the SMB3 community. In closing I bring you a comparison, if Mario Adventure was the demo world of Mario 3 then 3Mix is Demo World - The Legend Continues. Nuff’ Said.
