Rockman 2: Yendor Code

Hack of Mega Man 2

Description:

This is a hack of the JP version of Megaman 2 called Rockman 2 - Dr. Wily no Nazo. It changes the weapons, boss behavior, and level design. Included are two additional patches for any version of Rockman 2 which remove the main weapon use and start the player with all special weapons. An additonal patch starts the player off with less special weapon energy. Secondary patches do not apply Yendor Code’s changes, and thus can be used on any copy of RM2.

Unique, creative, but nastily hard

Yendor Code is a slightly lesser known hack by the creator of Rockman 5 Air Sliding, and like AS uses the original game’s graphics and music with heavy ASM changes. Though it may look and sound similar, Yendor Code is a far different game. The difficulty is much higher, bosses and enemies are completely redesigned, and perhaps most importantly, the weaponry acts quite differently.

Simply put, Yendor Code is a game that expects you to start out good and become better just to progress. Getting your first weapon is tough, and even though the new weapons are rather powerful you will likely still struggle to learn your way through each stage. The difficulty somehow manages to continue to escalate as this goes on, leading to one of the toughest Skull Fortresses in Rockman history.

Whether or not you should play this hack really comes down to a personal preference; Are you willing to die a few hundred times for the sake of an interesting new experience? If so, then Yendor Code is the hack for you. Otherwise, it may be best to pass this one up or use savestates.

As a note, the “Omake” patches which start you off with all weapons function for any Rockman 2 rom and most hacks. It’s a fun new way to experience the game and adds a bit of replay value to the patch as a whole. If you don’t like the main hack itself, then I highly suggest trying those out instead.
